The Return of Giorgio’s Disco

The Return of Giorgio’s Disco Nightlife really is back and for those of us who like to paint the town, May is so abundant, the FOMO is getting very real. This weekend marks drag’s biggest gathering, a major music festival and the return of club legend Bryan Rabin’s much-missed Giorgio’s dance party. Back for a limited engagement at Grandmaster Recorders (the former recording studio where everyone from David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix to  Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age have laid down hits) the dance floor decadence should be full tilt.  Formerly at the now-shuttered Standard Hotel’s Mmhmmm nightclub, the disco wonderland was inspired by Giorgio Moroder, the famed Italian producer responsible for the synthy/sexy vibe and escapism of ’70s and ’80s club and movie music. With the recent release of Spinning Gold (about Casablanca Records) and a new Donna Summer doc coming, this hot spot’s return is well-timed, but then again, the kind glamour and groove that makes Rabin’s clubs hits (Cherry, hi...

The Linda Lindas Conquered L.A., then Coachella. Next– the World!  The Linda Lindas Conquered L.A., then Coachella: If Coachella 2023’s lineup made a lot of music fans feel like they were out of touch in terms of what “the kids are listening to these days,” it also offered an easy way to discover precisely that via a user-friendly YouTube livestream of the festival. Sure, people of all ages still endured the expansive music fest, but many who might not have otherwise opened their minds to the new music lineup were able to do so from the comfort of their couches. L.A.’s youthful viral sensations the Linda Lindas surely won over their share of new fans, young and old, last month.During their broadcasted Saturday, April 15 set, they encountered persistent sound problems (the mics repeatedly went out). But the technical difficulties led the girls – guitarist Bela Salazar (18), bassist Eloise Wong (15), guitarist Lucia de la Garza (16) and drummer Mila de la Garza (12) — to make the show an interactive exchange with fans that was inspiring and exh...

Saratoga awards $5,400 in grants for community events Saratoga’s city council awarded $5,400 in grants to four community events at its May 3 meeting, but one councilmember questioned the compliance of one group’s application. The funds, which will go toward putting on the Dragon Boat Festival, the Blossom Festival, the Mural Mural on the Wall painting event and a community art contest, come out of an $8,000 budget for community event grants. The city started awarding these grants in 2013 as a way to incentivize volunteer-run events that enrich the community and celebrate Saratoga.Councilmember Chuck Page said the council should not have awarded $500 to a Girl Scout troop to make and pass out paper flowers at the Blossom Festival, as the troop isn’t running the event.’“We’re giving money for a group to participate in an event,” Page said. “I’m actually surprised that other groups haven’t picked up on this and asked for money to have a booth at another person’s event.”The Blossom Festival is an annual event run by the Saratoga ...

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory achieved a stunning breakthrough on fusion energy By Bill Weir | CNN Chief Climate CorrespondentAfter generations of trying to produce the power of a star on Earth, a successful nuclear fusion ignition happened in the middle of a December night and was over in 20-billionths of a second. That’s more than 100 billion times shorter than the Wright Brothers’ first, 12-second flight — but a brief, shining moment that could have even bigger implications for humanity. But while the science teams at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are still buzzing over their Wright-Brothers moment, we only remember that name because their third flight stayed in the sky for 39 minutes.RELATED: How Livermore scientists produced fusion breakthrough by recreating the power of the sunThe nuclear fusion reaction must be repeated, extended and scaled before the comparison sticks. And the race is on to make it work.“But that’s what makes it so exciting, right?” lead scientist Tammy Ma told CNN. “The potential is so great f...

Ukraine says it has retaken territory near embattled eastern city of Bakhmut KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian military commanders said Friday that their troops had recaptured more territory from Russian forces at the scene of the war’s longest and bloodiest battle, for the eastern city of Bakhmut, but it wasn’t clear if this marked the start of Kyiv’s long-expected counteroffensive. Russia’s Defense Ministry, meanwhile, said Kyiv had stepped up attacks north of the region. The 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) of territory retaken by Ukrainian forces south of Bakhmut this week represented a significant gain and will protect an important supply chain, according to commanders of Ukraine’s 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, a special forces unit that led the attack.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he met with the top military commanders Friday, noting that he heard a report from Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi whose forces “stopped the enemy and even pushed him back in some directions.”In a statement on Telegram on Friday, Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar con...

Reports: NBC Universal executive will take over as the new CEO of Twitter Elon Musk said he has found a new CEO for Twitter, or X Corp. as it’s now called, and multiple media reports identify her as Linda Yaccarino, an executive with NBCUniversal. Musk did not name Yaccarino, but on Friday NBCUniversal said that she would be stepping down from the company as chairwoman for global advertising and partnerships. Yaccarino interviewed Musk on a Miami stage last month in front of hundreds of advertisers. Musk, who bought Twitter last fall and has been running it since, has long insisted he is not the company’s permanent CEO. The Tesla billionaire said in a tweet Thursday that his role will transition to being Twitter’s executive chairman and chief technology officer. In mid-November, just a few weeks after buying the social media platform for $44 billion, he told a Delaware court that he does not want to be the CEO of any company. While testifying, Musk said “I expect to reduce my time at Twitter and find somebody else to run Twitter over time.”More than ...

Rose, previously known as Ben David Lewis, received a two-year suspended sentence in June 2016 for the child pornography offenses in the English city of St. Albans. By August of the same year, with a new name and passport, he was working as a nanny in the Spanish city of Zaragoza. Rose then moved to Madrid and worked as a nanny there for two more young children before taking a job as an English teacher at a private school.
