US files charges in Michigan over diesel engine tampering

DETROIT (AP) — Eleven people have been charged in Michigan in a scheme to evade air-pollution rules by tampering with software and hardware in heavy-duty diesel engines, federal authorities said Wednesday.Nine of the 11 have agreed to plead guilty, along with three companies, according to documents filed simultaneously in federal court in western Michigan.Diesel Freak LLC, based in Gaylord, has agreed to pay a $750,000 fine. Accurate Truck Service, based in Grand Rapids, and a related company, Griffin Transportation, have each agreed to pay $500,000, court filings show.Diesel Freak conducted remote engine reprogramming and counted Accurate Truck and Griffin Transportation as customers, authorities said.Diesel engine modifications can “improve the horsepower, torque, fuel efficiency or other characteristics of diesel engines,” the government said in the charging document. “These unlawful modifications result in a dramatic increase in multiple pollutants being emitted by each vehicle....

WVa GOP governor to reveal plans amid Senate run speculation

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia Republican Gov. Jim Justice is set to reveal his 2024 election plans, ending months of speculation about whether he’ll seek the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democrat Joe Manchin.Justice is scheduled to make an announcement Thursday evening at The Greenbrier, the posh resort in White Sulphur Springs that he bought out of bankruptcy in 2009. The event will be held on his 72nd birthday.Justice, who is barred by state law from seeking a third consecutive term as governor, has been fielding questions about his Senate plans for months. If he runs for Senate, the announcement would set up what could be a hard-fought campaign against two of the state’s most prominent politicians.Manchin, who endorsed Justice in his first gubernatorial bid before their relationship deteriorated, has said he plans to decide his future plans in December, although Manchin’s federal campaign filings show he already has more than $9.7 million cash on hand. ...

BALTIMORE (AP) — Attorneys for Adnan Syed filed a motion Wednesday asking a Maryland appellate court to reconsider its recent decision to reinstate his decadesold murder conviction and life sentence, a ruling that upheld arguments from the victim’s family claiming a lower court violated their rights.Syed, whose protracted legal odyssey gained international attention from the hit podcast “Serial,” regained his freedom last year after Baltimore prosecutors moved to vacate his conviction, saying they reviewed the case and found alternative suspects and unreliable evidence used at trial.But the victim’s family said they received insufficient notice to attend the September vacatur hearing in person, which violated their right to be “treated with dignity and respect,” and the Maryland Appellate Court last month agreed. Police arrest 2 injured in shooting that killed girl, 12

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Hartford police said Wednesday that they have filed criminal charges against two teenagers who were wounded in a drive-by shooting that also killed a 12-year-old girl who was an innocent bystander. The shooter or shooters, meanwhile, remain at large.Authorities disclosed new information alleging one of the teens, 18-year-old Jeremy Francis, exchanged gunfire with the drive-by suspect or suspects in the April 20 shooting, which killed seventh grader Se’Cret Pierce as she sat in a parked car. A 23-year-old man also was wounded.Francis was served with an arrest warrant two days after the shooting while being treated at Saint Francis Hospital. Man allegedly breaks into East High School after hours, steals car

DENVER (KDVR) — Police are investigating an alleged burglary that occurred at Denver East High School Monday when a man entered the school after hours and stole a car.According to the Denver Police Department, officers received a call at about 7 p.m. from the school about a burglary.DPD said an adult man entered East High School through a propped door and then rummaged through students' belongings. 3 high schoolers arrested in deadly rock-throwing crime spree Officers said the man stole a set of car keys and then stole the car from the parking lot. DPD did recover the car Tuesday morning in the area of Gaylord and Wesley, which is about five miles away from the school.The alleged burglary happened after school and SRO hours, according to DPD.As of Wednesday, no arrests have been made, but DPD said they are making progress with the investigation.Investigators do not believe the individual was associated with the school.

Suspected carjacker who led police on multi-county chase captured south of Sunrise Blvd

Police were in pursuit of a suspected carjacker. Miami-Dade Police officers and Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies were in pursuit of a vehicle that headed southbound on Interstate 75 towards West Broward, Wednesday afternoon. The pursuit started in Miami-Dade County. The vehicle has been described as a red Mercedes Benz G Wagon. According to police, the victim of the vehicle was also pursuing the suspected carjacker. The vehicle exited on Sunrise Boulevard and the driver fled on foot towards an apartment building on Northwest 12th Avenue and 77th Street. 7Skyforce hovered the scene where officers with K-9 units entered the building to find the suspect.
