Golf revolves around money this year. The Ryder Cup is not immune GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — In a year where golf seems to revolve around money, the Ryder Cup is not immune. The PGA Tour had 11 tournaments with at least $20 million in prize money — excluding the majors — as it tried to hold off the threat of Saudi-funded LIV Golf. And then it struck an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s national wealth fund to be business partners.Pro golf is only going to get richer, however that Saudi agreement gets worked out, if it does.“I’m tired of it. The whole world is,” Seth Waugh, the CEO of the PGA of America, said in an interview leading into the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone. “We play for love and they play for money. It’s the one time of the year they should be playing for love, and we’re still talking about money. I get it.”Waugh said he had not had any conversations with players about it this year, though he has in the past on the topic of getting a bigger share of the revenue.“Nothing obnoxious or awful,” Waugh said. “That mak...

South Africa seeks quarterfinal berth at Rugby World Cup. Australia seeks some redemption Respect for Australia has sunk so low that people ask the coach of winless Portugal, “Think you can beat them?”Patrice Lagisquet wishes. He smiles at the cheek of the question. He knows that even though the Wallabies are down and almost out of the Rugby World Cup, they still pose a formidable challenge for his team on Sunday in Saint-Etienne.“It’s fantastic to hear everyone say, ‘Do you think you can win?’” Lagisquet says. “But don’t forget we are the 16th nation in the ranking and will play a team used to playing at a higher level with very good players and a very good coach.“If we are very lucky, maybe we will have a little chance. But don’t forget they won by 20 points against Georgia, who we just drew with. But I am proud of what we do and consider that we will play one of the best teams in the world even if they are not at their best at the moment.”Meanwhile, defending champion South Africa can secure a quarterfinal place on Sunday in Marseille with a bon...

Russian para-athletes allowed to compete in Paris 2024 Games under neutral flag Russian and Belarusian para-athletes will be able to participate at next year’s Paris 2024 Games “in an individual and neutral capacity” after the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) voted against a full suspension of the two countries’ national Paralympic committees. The decision was slammed by Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak. “Permitting participation of Russians in the Paralympic Games … prolongs the war,” Podolyak said in a post on social media. The IPC on Friday “partially suspended” the two countries’ national committees due to “breaches of constitutional membership obligations.”Under the decision, athletes will have to perform under a neutral flag and without a national team or emblems, and the national committees won’t be allowed to organize any sport events, the IPC said. The sanctions come two weeks before the International Olympic Committee convenes in Mumbai to discuss the participant of Russia ...

Gunnar Henderson named Most Valuable Oriole in sensational rookie season

Gunnar Henderson named Most Valuable Oriole in sensational rookie season For the second straight year, a rookie has been named the best player on the Orioles.Gunnar Henderson, at just 22 years old, was announced as the Most Valuable Oriole on Saturday, as local media recognized the young star who helped propel Baltimore atop the American League. Before 2022, only two rookies had been named MVO in Orioles history dating back to 1954. Now, Baltimore’s rebuild has paid off, as Henderson follows Adley Rutschman, who won the award last year, as rookie MVOs.The two former No. 1 overall prospects winning the award is further proof — if any was needed — that the Orioles’ youth movement has arrived and is thriving. Rutschman and Henderson are the two best position players on the best team in the AL more than four years after Baltimore used its first two draft picks to select the college catcher and the high school infielder.Earlier this season, it appeared the race for MVO would be a tight one, as the balanced Orioles emerged thanks to ...

On the brink of a government shutdown, McCarthy pivots to a 45-day plan relying on Democratic help

On the brink of a government shutdown, McCarthy pivots to a 45-day plan relying on Democratic help WASHINGTON (AP) — On the brink of a federal government shutdown Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced a dramatic pivot Saturday, trying to push a 45-day funding bill through the House with Democratic help — a move that could keep government open but most certainly risks his job.Republican lawmakers met behind closed doors early in the morning with hours to go before the midnight deadline needed to fund government operations or face a disruptive federal closure. The new approach would leave behind aid to Ukraine that a growing number of Republicans oppose. The House was preparing for a quick vote Saturday on the plan. “Our options are slipping away every minute,” said one senior Republican, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, as he left the private session at the Capitol. With no deal in place before Sunday, federal workers will face furloughs, more than 2 million active-duty and reserve military troops will work without pay and programs and services that Americans rely on from coast to coas...

He was sentenced to life in prison without parole last year after a court found him guilty of attempting to overthrow the government by financing mass protests in 2013, known as the Gezi Park protests.Kavala, 65, has been jailed in Silivri prison, on the outskirts of Istanbul, since he was detained in 2017.“We wish to express our deep consternation at the decision of the Turkish Court of Cassation which confirmed the aggravated life sentence for philanthropist Osman Kavala,” said John Howell and Stefan Schennach, co-researchers for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, or P...

Anti-abortion groups are at odds on strategies ahead of Ohio vote. It could be a preview for 2024 COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Abortion opponents in Ohio are at odds not only over how to frame their opposition to a reproductive rights initiative on the state’s November ballot but also over their longer-term goals on how severely they would restrict the procedure. The disagreements, roiling the anti-abortion side just six weeks before Election Day, are providing a window into the challenges the wider movement is preparing to navigate next year. Initiatives to protect reproductive rights are expected in multiple states and abortion will be a central issue in candidate races up and down the ballot.Scattershot campaign messaging in Ohio hints at some of the internal conflict among members of the broad anti-abortion coalition aligned against the constitutional amendment that seeks to protect abortion access in Ohio.Early ads played on voters’ fears by warning that the amendment, known as Issue 1, would be a gateway to teenagers getting abortions and gender-transition surgeries wi...
