NFL notes: What happened to all of the Patriots’ rivalries?

Remember Terrell Suggs?Sneering, snarling, quarterback-sacking Terrell Suggs? The ex-Ravens linebacker who used to incite Tom Brady in a way few could, reach into Brady’s competitive soul and poke the greatest quarterback of all time? Suggs hunted quarterbacks with the best of them in the mid-2010s, including Brady. He would stand and flex over his victims, a football villain with a message: I came, I saw, I sacked. No one was safe, in his mind or his teammates. Not even Brady and the Patriots at the peak of their powers. In 23-plus seasons, Suggs’ Ravens remain one of only three teams with multiple playoff wins over the Bill Belichick-era Patriots, joining the Giants and Broncos. Once upon a time, in a dynasty that feels far, far away, the Ravens, Giants and Broncos were seen as rivals. Competitive equals, the rare opponents who could wound the Patriots’ pride and undercut their standing as the class of the league. The Jets, under Eric Mangini and then Rex Ryan, cross...Fire prompts closure of SR-76 in Pauma Valley

PARIS (AP) — Families, community groups and far-left activists marched in cities around France on Saturday to decry racism and police brutality, putting authorities on edge at a time when French police are deployed en masse for a string of high-security events.Lingering anger over the killing by police of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk in June was an impetus for Saturday’s protests, but they included groups with disparate demands for immigrants’ rights, affordable housing and economic justice. More than 100 marches were planned around France, and Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin ordered special police vigilance.Tensions briefly flared at the largely peaceful, boisterous protest in Paris. Members of the crowd smashed windows of a bank along the march route, and police evacuated the rattled employees. At another spot, protesters surrounded a police car and an officer darted out, waving his gun. Some 30,000 police and gendarmes were working Saturday to keep order for a visit by Pope F...Lebanese and Israeli troops fire tear gas along the tense border in a disputed area

BEIRUT (AP) — The Lebanese army said troops fired tear gas at Israeli soldiers in a disputed area along the tense border Saturday. No one was hurt in the incident. The area where the incident occurred is in Chebaa Farms and the Kfar Chouba hills that were captured by Israel from Syria during the 1967 Mideast war and are part of Syria’s Golan Heights that Israel annexed in 1981. The Lebanese government says the area belongs to Lebanon. The Lebanese army said a bulldozer was working on the Lebanese side of the border to remove a sand barrier placed earlier by the Israelis when Israeli troops fired tear gas to force it to stop. The army said Lebanese troops responded by firing tear gas at the Israeli soldiers. The Israeli military said soldiers spotted an engineering vehicle’s shovel crossing the border line from Lebanon into Israeli territory in the area of Mount Dov, as Chebaa Farms are known in Israel. It added that in response, Israeli soldiers used “riot dispersal means” and the veh...Weekend Break: Oktoberfest 2023

It makes Dallas the largest city in the country with a Republican mayor, passing neighboring Fort Worth.“Today I am changing my party affiliation. Next spring, I will be voting in the Republican primary,” Johnson wrote. “When my career in elected office ends in 2027 on the inauguration of my successor as mayor, I will leave office as a Republican.” Why Gavin Newsom says he’s not running for president in 2024 Though he wrote that the switch may come as a surprise to many, few Dallas Democrats appeared to be shocked by the move. Texas Democratic Party leadership called the switch “welcome” and said he was dishonest for running as a Democrat for his reelection in May this year.“Given his long-standing affinity with Republican leader...3 men dead, another in critical condition following shooting, stabbing at Roseville home

One day after the Lynx’s season ended in a Game 3 loss to Connecticut in the first round of the WNBA playoffs, coach and general manager Cheryl Reeve said players and coaches alike could walk away from the season with their heads held high, knowing they gave everything they had.“As a team, I think what we’re pleased about is that we maximized the group,” Reeve said. “I think we squeezed everything we could.”Frankly, that’s not really up for debate. That a team prognosticated at the season’s outset to finish in the bottom third of the league dug itself out of an 0-6 hole to not only make the playoffs, but push a top-three team such as the Sun to the brink of elimination equates to a remarkable season that exceeded any outside expectations. But those expectations are sure to elevate heading into 2024.“Now those same people go, ‘Oh, wait, Napheesa Collier is a top-five player in the league.’ Kayla McBride had a really fine season for us, and the expectation is Diamond Miller is go...Latest news
