Ukraine may still be dominating the news cycle in Europe. But in Kyiv, there are jitters that its bid to join the EU is slipping off the front page. An informal update on the process from Brussels widely expected in April is more likely to arrive in late May, according to EU and Ukrainian officials. It’s poor timing for Kyiv, which is now also quarreling with some of its closest EU allies over a glut of Ukrainian grain shipments that depressed local prices and left farmers fuming. The incidents are crystallizing a difficult reality for Kyiv: Joining the EU was always going to be hard. It will take time for Brussels to sort through the logistics. It will be difficult to maintain political support during the bureaucratic lulls. And countries will be increasingly anxious about the economic turbulence that may result from integrating more than 40 million Ukrainians and their major industries into the EU. On the logistics front, EU officials close to the membership process...Dog shot in Dorchester after attacking officer, police say

Their first single, “Rescued,” was made available along with the announcement. In a news release, the band said that the album comes “following a year of staggering losses, personal introspection and bittersweet remembrances.”“A brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything Foo Fighters endured over the last year, ‘But Here We Are’ is a testament to the healing powers of music, friendship and family,” their statement continued.Hawkins had been a beloved member of the Foo Fighters for more than two decades before his shocking death in March of 2022 at the age of 50. There are a lot of NFL teams that could survive a player like Saquon Barkley holding out into the regular season, not playing and being disgruntled when he did return to the team. But the Giants aren’t one of them. The contract standoff makes sense from the team’s perspective for plenty of reasons:Barkley plays running back. He already has an extensive injury history. Some of his fundamentals are either poor (pass blocking) or overrated (pass-catching) in critical areas. All of that undermines his argument that he should be paid like one of the league’s two best backs, if not the top five. But Barkley’s value to the 2023 Giants specifically is greater than it would be to a lot of other teams.Despite his flaws, Barkley remains the best playmaker on a roster that has not sufficiently upgraded the offense around quarterback Daniel Jones yet.Did you know that the Giants had a 6-1 record in Barkley’s seven best rushing games last season with him being their best...‘Controlled demolition’ now planned for collapsed lower Manhattan parking garage that killed one

Thomas Tracy| New York Daily NewsA “controlled demolition” is now planned for the century-old lower Manhattan parking garage that collapsed, killing one, after first responders painstakingly remove cars and debris from the site, FDNY officials said Wednesday. While no one is believed to be trapped or unaccounted for at the four-story Ann St. garage following Tuesday’s collapse, the FDNY will continue to have a presence at the site to put out any potential fires and search for any possible human remains, a department official said. All utilities to the building were shut off as preparations for the demolition were made, city officials said. The first phase of the demolition will be the removal of the vehicles that were in the garage when the top floor pancaked down on the levels below, officials said. The upper floors packed with cars crumbled, sending vehicles into the void below, jaw-dropping photos taken from adjacent buildings show. One person was killed and seven people suffered mino...Gun deaths drive historic spike in child mortality rates

After decades of steady improvement, the death rate of America’s children and teens shot up between 2019 and 2021 — and COVID-19 wasn’t the reason.Gun-related deaths represented the largest share of the increase — by far.According to an analysis of the most recent death certificate data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, published last month in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the mortality rate among children ages 1 to 19 rose by 11% between 2019 and 2020, and by an additional 8% between 2020 and 2021.It marks the first time in recent memory that child death rates have risen substantially, Dr. Steven Woolf, a professor of population health and health equity at Virginia Commonwealth University and lead author of the study, said in an interview with Stateline. And it’s the biggest increase in U.S. child mortality in more than 50 years, according to the study.“We’ve made tremendous progress in treating childhood diseases and preventing a wide r...'Bring Your Own Cup Day' returns to 7-Eleven: Here are the rules
