Colorado mandates audit of halfway houses for first time in 20 years

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:26:57 GMT

Colorado’s halfway houses will get an independent financial audit for the first time in 20 years, after a ProPublica investigation found a lack of oversight contributes to a system where more people end up incarcerated than rehabilitated.A new state law directs Colorado’s Division of Criminal Justice to hire a third-party auditor to evaluate the finances of halfway houses every five years, including the costs imposed on residents of the facilities. The findings of the first audits will be presented to lawmakers by July 1, 2025.“The goal is to make sure (halfway house programs) are working the way they were intended and to evaluate if they have the funds to meet those expectations,” state Rep. Emily Sirota, a Denver Democrat who co-sponsored the bill, told ProPublica. “We need the necessary data to assess that.”There are three ways people typically arrive in Colorado’s halfway houses: Some are sentenced by a judge to community corrections in lieu of jail or prison; others are finishi...

Harriette Cole: My husband has become insufferable about what we should eat

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:26:57 GMT

DEAR HARRIETTE: It took 20 years to get my husband to get a colonoscopy. Now he has done it, and all he seems to be able to do is harp on what we should and should not be eating. He read up about the benefits of having a clean colon and can’t stop talking about it.Of course it is smart to eat healthy, and I know that. What I can’t stand is his holier-than-thou attitude.I can’t tell you how often I tried to cut down on red meat in the past, only to have him demand more meat on the table. Now, all of a sudden, he realizes that this is a good idea. How can I have a better attitude about him waking up to healthy eating? Right now, I am fuming because he is demanding things I have encouraged him to do for years but, of course, with no acknowledgment of my prompts.Eat WellDEAR EAT WELL: Sometimes we don’t get credit when it is due. It often takes someone outside our immediate family or friend group to open our eyes to what should be obvious.Related ArticlesAdvice | ...

The Qatar-funded network in Doha said that Hisham Abdel Aziz had been released. It offered no other details. Authorities in Egypt did not immediately acknowledge his release either. He was freed on Sunday, said Khaled el-Balshy, head of Egypt’s Journalists’ Union. His wife posted an image Sunday of Abdel Aziz online, thanking God for him. The network has said that Abdel Aziz was stopped at Cairo International Airport in June 2019 while he was traveling for a family trip. They say he was “subjected to enforced disappearance for around a month” before being found in custody.
