MADRID (AP) — The Spanish league has filed a complaint with the European Commission regarding the “funding mechanisms” used by Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain.The Spanish league said in a statement made public Saturday that it was acting under new European Union regulations of foreign subsidies. It argues that PSG — owned by Qatar Sports Investments since June 2011 — has an unfair advantage in the market for players and coaches.“La Liga has filed a complaint alleging that PSG has received foreign subsidies from the State of Qatar, which has allowed it to improve its competitive position, thus generating significant distortions in several national and EU markets,” the league said.In January, the European Commission — the executive arm of the EU — passed new regulations regarding foreign subsidies granted to companies inside the EU. The new rules, according to the EU, give “the Commission the power to investigate financial contributions granted by non-EU countries to companies engagi...Prince George’s Co. man sentenced to 18 years for fatally stabbing minister at DC hookah bar

Just as football season kicks off, a new study shows that playing tackle football might raise the risk for Parkinson’s disease.Researchers from the BU CTE Center found that people with a history of playing organized tackle football had a 61% increased chance of having a reported diagnosis for Parkinson’s disease or parkinsonism — motor symptoms found in Parkinson’s and other conditions.Repetitive head impacts from tackle football have been tied to long-term neurological consequences, like chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). But there hasn’t been much research on the link between tackle football and Parkinson’s disease (PD).“Playing tackle football could be a contributing risk factor to PD, particularly among people already at risk due to other factors (e.g., family history),” said corresponding study author Michael Alosco, associate professor of neurology at Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine.“However, the...Writers Guild of America and producers alliance resume negotiations as Hollywood holds its breath

LOS ANGELES — Negotiators for film and TV writers were set to meet with studio representatives Friday afternoon, a step that could represent a long-awaited thaw in the icy Hollywood strike that has largely kept the entertainment industry at a standstill since early May.Writers Guild of America members have been on strike for more than 100 days, resulting in headaches for studios and financial losses for entertainment-related businesses, including talent agencies and prop houses and crew members struggling to make ends meet. The situation escalated in mid-July when film and TV actors joined writers on the picket lines. It’s not clear whether the talks will lead to a significant breakthrough or how long it will take for the sides to reach a deal for a new three-year contract between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Most industry observers and insiders are still bracing for the conflict to stretch on for weeks, if not months. The sides remain far...Top Fox executive departing over Dominion settlement

As part of his separation agreement, Dinh will receive a $23 million lump-sum payment and $2.5 million a year as an adviser under a two-year contract.A Fox statement didn’t state a reason for Dinh’s departure, but a person familiar with the matter, though stressing the parting was amicable, said it was largely due to unhappiness at the company over his handling of the Dominion case and its outcome — the largest payout ever in a media defamation case.“We appreciate Viet’s many contributions and service to Fox as both a board member of 21st Century Fox and in his role over the last five years as a valued member of Fox’s l...Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Barrie and central Ontario
