ST. LOUIS – After a frightening car crash near a St. Louis school more than two weeks ago, car parts, broken glass, and a damaged fire hydrant remain on the street and sidewalk at Nebraska Avenue and Winnebago Street. Residents want something done before someone else gets hurt. The crash happened shortly after 11 p.m. on Nov. 13. Fifteen days later, it appears as though the crash took place just hours ago. Residents say no one has come to clean up the debris.A woman riding her bike past the mess posted on social media, “Is it too much to ask that children walking to school at Froebel (elementary) not be subjected to this?”The school is on the corner opposite the shattered glass, car bumper, tail light, various other car parts, damaged stop sign, and uprooted hydrant.A new stop sign has been installed, but the old one remains, along with the severed metal post that used to hold it up. LEMAY, Mo. – The Lemay Fire Protection District has responded to so many chimney fires over the years that the department’s firefighters have created their own bucket of tools designed specifically for chimney-related fires. The bucket is made of metal, which gives firefighters a safe place to deposit hot embers. Firefighters can wet towels stored inside the bucket to create steam. The steam can help extinguish a chimney fire while minimizing water damage to a home.Bags filled with fire-extinguishing materials are also stored inside the bucket. Firefighters can drop them down a chimney.“It’s an extinguishing agent that’s exactly like your fire extinguisher that you would have in your kitchen,” Lt. Jason Brice, Lemay Fire Protection District, said. ST. LOUIS – After 18 months of waiting and petitioning, the Detention Facilities Oversight Board finally got a tour of the troubled St. Louis City Justice Center jail in downtown."Today's a new day; today's a first step," DFOB Chair Darryl Gray said outside the City Justice Center on Tuesday. It was a step that came with some hurdles. Each board member needed to complete a 16-hour security training before entering the jail, training that Gray felt was “obstructing” access."We felt as a board the training, the way it was constructed, was to delay us and deny us accessibility," Gray said. The DFOB originally wanted a two-hour tour of the facility's medical unit and to speak with detainees and correctional officers, but that did not happen. Instead, the board met with Commissioner of Corrections Jennifer Clemmons-Abdullah for about an hour. Gray said the meeting was productive but that more access needed to be granted.
