The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art’s annual auction has long been considered a premier event in the South Bay for art lovers to add interesting pieces to their collection. And there’ll be plenty to bid on at Saturday’s event, but Executive Director James Leventhal wants the event to do more than just raise money for the downtown gallery and its artists. He wants to use the event to celebrate art and artists — and to maybe unlock the artist in everyone who comes through the doors.“We all need uplifting right now,” he said. “We want to bring the kind of experience for people that the Tech does or the Children’s Discovery Museum does.”“Cascade 11.21.21” by Bay Area artist Gale Antokal is one of the pieces being offered at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art annual auction Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023. Antokal will also be honored by the ICA at the event. (Sal Pizarro/Bay Area News Group) As part of that, the...Stanford, San Jose State to renew football series in 2024

SAARBRUECKEN, Germany (AP) — Bayern Munich crashed out of the German Cup in a 2-1 loss to third-division Saarbruecken on Wednesday as coach Thomas Tuchel said defender Matthijs de Ligt suffered a “very painful” knee injury ahead of the weekend’s “Klassiker” against Borussia Dortmund.Bayern seemed set to cruise through the second-round game when Thomas Müller opened the scoring in the 16th minute but Saarbruecken leveled just before halftime and Marcel Gaus won the game with a deflected shot in the sixth minute of stoppage time. The final whistle sparked jubilation for Saarbruecken, whose substitutes and staff ran onto the field to celebrate in a huddle with the team.Dutch defender de Ligt went off in the 24th minute. The only other specialist center backs in Bayern’s first-team squad are Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano, who has missed the last month with a hamstring injury. NEW YORK (AP) — In a closing argument, a prosecutor told New York jurors Wednesday to follow overwhelming evidence of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried ‘s “pyramid of deceit” to find him guilty of defrauding customers and investors of at least $10 billion while a defense lawyer said prosecutors were unfairly portraying an honest entrepreneur as a monster.Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicolas Roos launched a day of closings in Manhattan federal court by saying Bankman-Fried was to blame for stealing billions of dollars from investors worldwide. Bankman-Fried insisted during four days of testimony that he didn’t know his customers’ deposits were in such danger until weeks before his companies collapsed.“He told a story and he lied to you,” Roos told jurors a day after Bankman-Fried concluded his testimony at the monthlong trial. The prosecutor said Bankman-Fried wanted jurors to believe that he had no idea what was happening at his companies or that there was fraud, but his tes...Coach Frank Reich says QB Bryce Young’s ceiling will improve if Panthers find a way to protect him
