SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) -- Ski patrollers and paramedics at Loveland Ski Area voted to unionize with CWA 7781, the United Professional Ski Patrols of America, an organization supporting hundreds of ski patrollers.    This marks the first time in the 85 year-history of Loveland Ski Area that patrollers have formed a union. Kevin Donaldson has been a key contributor in the push for unionization. He’s been a ski patroller at Loveland Ski Area for seven seasons. “It’s a really exciting time at Loveland,” Donaldson said. “We created a dialogue and now we have that voice with management and amongst our peers.” More than 70% of patrollers and paramedics at Loveland Ski Area signed the petition to unionize which was submitted on Feb. 14. The results were finalized on Friday, April 14.  April snowfall makes for a snow-covered final weekend at Eldora Mountain “We’re all sort of one now, one collective group of people that are going to have th...

Grayson Rodriguez bounces back and Cedric Mullins has 4 RBIs as Orioles rally past White Sox, 8-4, win series

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:45:59 GMT

For the third straight start to begin his major league career, Grayson Rodriguez walked the first batter of the game. The recent trend of poor first innings — and innings that unravel on the young right-hander — reached a new peak Sunday against the Chicago White Sox when the Orioles’ top pitching prospect allowed four runs and two homers in the opening frame after walking the first batter. But what started with the worst inning of his nascent big league career ended as perhaps his most encouraging outing. Rodriguez got a double play to escape the first and then retired 12 of the next 15 batters while striking out a career-high eight batters over his final four scoreless frames. After the four-run first, Rodriguez kept Baltimore in the game, allowing the Orioles’ offense the chance to come back and win, 8-4.The Orioles (9-7) scored three runs in the fourth off Dylan Cease, the 2022 American League Cy Young runner-up, tied the game in the sixth and then plated t...

Mets sweep A’s after extra-innings win in series finale

OAKLAND, Calif. — Eduardo Escobar looked like he was finally going to break through with the big hit that had eluded him all season. But then Tony Kemp laid out to make a diving catch in left field, robbing Escobar of extra bases.Again, in the ninth Escobar had a chance to be the hero for the Mets with the game tied at 3-3 and only one out. But the Oakland A’s went to the bullpen and Sam Moll (0-2) got the job done, getting Escobar to hit into a double play. The Mets ultimately defeated the A’s 4-3 in 10 innings to complete their first sweep of the season, with a wild pitch by right-hander Zach Jackson scoring Escobar, of all people, in the 10th inning on Sunday afternoon at RingCentral Coliseum. Escobar was used as the ghost runner to start the inning. It’s been a tough start to the season for Escobar and now his future with the Mets (10-6) is murky as the club is set to call up third base prospect Brett Baty for the next series against the Los Angeles Dodgers...

‘This is the best city in the world’

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:45:59 GMT

Boston never forgets. That perseverance will be on display today at the 127th running of the Boston Marathon and was also found at Fenway Park Sunday afternoon and Sunday night at the Greg Hill Foundation’s 10 Years Stronger fundraiser.“We love you Boston strong,” said Marty Walsh, the former mayor and Labor Secretary who has jumped to the NHL Players’ Union. But he summed up the overwhelming spirit shared by everyone at the event — from Bruin Cam Neely, Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, bombing survivor Paul Norden, music lover and car magnate Ernie Boch Jr., WEEI personality Greg Hill, former Suffolk DA Dan Conley and hundreds more — who promised to help bombing survivors “in perpetuity.”That’s a long time.“This is the best city in the world,” said Norden, who lost his right leg a decade ago in the bombings on Boylston Street. He was at the event along with what seemed to be the entire city. But it’s what he told the ...

Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro broke his right hand in the first half of Sunday’s Eastern Conference playoff opener against the Milwaukee Bucks at Fiserv Forum, likely ending his postseason.Herro was injured diving for a loose ball late in the second quarter and immediately attempted to head to the locker room, cradling his arm.A native of the Milwaukee area, Herro had 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting in the first half.Duncan Robinson started the second half in place of Herro.Herro’s injury likely will move Victor OIadipo back into the rotation. Oladipo, a defensive standout in last season’s Heat run to the Eastern Conference finals, had fallen out of the primary rotation since Kyle Lowry returned March 11 from a month out due to knee soreness. The Bucks lost All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo to a back contusion earlier in the game, putting his status for the balance of the best-of-seven series into question.Game 2 of the series is 9 p.m. Wednesday at Fiserv Forum, a...

David Ortiz knows that what he said at the first game at Fenway Park after the Boston Marathon bombing had an impact — in Boston and around the world.Ortiz and many of his 2013 World Series champion teammates were honored Sunday in Boston before the Red Sox played the Los Angeles Angels. He’ll also be the grand marshal for this year’s marathon, which will be run Monday morning.Ten years ago, two bombs detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring nearly 300. Five days later, the Red Sox played a home game, at Fenway, where Ortiz stood in front of the pitcher’s mound and said: “This is our (expletive) city. And nobody’s gonna dictate our freedom. Stay strong.”The Red Sox took off after that moment and went on to win the World Series.“You know what, 10 years later I can tell you about the impact of what I say (had),” Ortiz said Sunday. “To be honest with you, I’m so proud it was take...

INVERMERE, B.C. — Avalanche Canada says a snowmobiler died after being caught in an avalanche in a riding area northwest of Invermere, B.C. The avalanche safety organization says a trio of snowmobilers was riding a slope above Whirlpool Lake on Saturday when two of the riders were caught up in a slide. Avalanche Canada says one rider managed to avoid being buried, but one was trapped under two metres of snow. It says the other riders found and dug the buried rider out and did CPR before search and rescue arrived and transported the victim to Invermere in a helicopter. Avalanche Canada says the trio was riding a slope in the Thunderwater Lake area when the avalanche occurred. Avalanche Canada and alpine enthusiasts have sounded the alarm about the province’s dangerously unstable snowpack in some areas, with more than a dozen people killed in slides this season. This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 16, 2023. The Canadian Press

TORONTO — “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is set to disappear from Toronto.Mirvish Productions announced Sunday it plans to close the stage play based on J.K. Rowling’s characters that opened less than 10 months ago. The wizards take their final bows on July 2 at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre. The end of “Harry Potter” comes as Canadian live theatre struggles for direction in the wake of extensive COVID-19 closures and a slow recovery. Producers hoped to cast a spell over audiences with a familiar franchise and theatrical spectacle that includes flying actors and impressive pyrotechnics. But the stage production was a gamble from the start. Toronto producer David Mirvish said when taking into account ticket sales trends, it became clear that high running costs would make it difficult to keep the show open.“In other times, it probably would’ve gone longer,” he acknowledged.“If we hadn’t had to deal with the pandemic, it would...
