Atmospheric river storm to bring heavy rain to southern B.C., Environment Canada says

VICTORIA — Environment Canada says a heavy rain storm it’s calling an atmospheric river is forecast to hit southern British Columbia Monday. The agency says the storm will bring heavy rain and snow at higher elevations and increase the risk of flooding and landslides. But it says the storm is forecast to be weaker than the November 2021 atmospheric river that caused massive floods in the Fraser Valley, created slides that cut off major highway and rail links and overflowed dikes threatening communities and forcing evacuations.A special weather statement from Environment Canada says elevated ocean water levels near Metro Vancouver, the southern Gulf Islands and Saanich Peninsula are expected to create high astronomical tides. It says minor coastal flooding is possible along exposed shorelines. It also notes the elevated water levels at high tide are expected to persist until Tuesday. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 3, 2023.The Canadian PressQuebec police investigate death of man acquitted last year in organized crime murder

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s the end of the road for Kiss. But it’s not the end of Kiss. The hard-rocking quartet from New York City played final live concerts Friday and Saturday at Madison Square Garden, culminating a half century of rocking and rolling all night and partying every day.And there was a surprise ending. But it wasn’t cameo appearances by former members, as many fans had wanted. Instead, in a venture meant to keep Kiss out there — somewhere — forever, Kiss announced at the end of Saturday’s final show that the band will live on indefinitely as digitized avatars — to be deployed in ways yet to be revealed. One hint, though: In a promotional video released after the show, Gene Simmons said, “It’s gonna be the best concert you’ve ever seen.” (Presumably for an added fee.)Many Kiss fans said they are not interested in paying to see virtual recreations of the band, including syndicated rock host Eddie Trunk. DETROIT (AP) — Casino workers for MGM Grand Detroit have voted to ratify a new contract, ending a 47-day strike. MGM Grand Detroit workers are union members of the Detroit Casino Council, which represents nearly 4,000 employees of the city’s three casinos. Their approval Saturday on a five-year agreement comes weeks after unionized workers reached an agreement with other two casinos following a roughly one-month strike. Workers at MGM Grand Detroit, Hollywood Casino at Greektown and MotorCity Casino walked off the job Oct. 17 over issues including health care and wages that had not kept up with the cost of living. The new agreement, which covers about 1,700 employees, includes an average immediate 18% pay raise, workload reductions and no health care costs increases for employees, according to the council. The union workers include dealers, cleaning staff and valets.“We sacrificed a lot during the pandemic, but we fought for and ultimately won a contract that secures our health...CPD: Woman arrested after striking, killing bicyclist in Lincoln Square

(CNN) — Mirna El Helbawi sits on a Cairo rooftop, her face illuminated by the moonlight and a phone in her hands, as she texts a terrified father whose wife and children are trapped in Gaza.“I don’t want a single thing from this world right now,” he writes to her in Arabic, “except to be able to talk to them, even if it’s for the last time, let me tell them goodbye.”El Helbawi, more than 200 miles away, can’t shield his family from the Israeli missiles raining down. But she can provide them with the chance to say one more “I love you.”The Egyptian writer and activist is the founder of Connecting Gaza, a grassroots initiative that uses eSIMs – or virtual SIM cards – to help Palestinians skirt telecommunication blackouts amid Israeli airstrikes across the territory.El Helbawi, along with a small group of volunteers and a legion of international donors, says they’ve restored telephone and internet connection to more than 200,000 Palestinians in Gaza, and will continue the effort until ...Latest news
