Mount Evans, the Colorado fourteener named after the state’s disgraced territorial governor, now has a new name: Mount Blue Sky.The U.S. Board on Geographic Names voted 15-1 on Friday afternoon to accept the proposal for the new name, which was one of six suggestions for the Front Range peak in Clear Creek County that’s prominently visible from across metro Denver. Three board members abstained.Territorial Gov. John Evans was forced to resign following the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864, when U.S. soldiers attacked and killed Cheyenne and Arapaho people in southeastern Colorado territory, even after they had tried to broker peace. The federal board selected Mount Blue Sky, the recommendation put forward by Colorado’s Geographic Names Advisory Board and Gov. Jared Polis. The new name also was backed by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes; the Northern Arapaho Tribe; the Southern Ute Indian Tribe of the Southern Ute Reservation, Colorado; and Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. The North...Denver to pay $825,000 to man jailed after presenting laundry-damaged ID at DIA

Denver City Council will vote Monday on whether to pay $825,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by a man jailed for three days after he presented an expired, laundry-damaged ID at Denver International Airport. The California ID was not a fake but police at DIA accused Juan Valenzuela of forging a government ID, a felony, even after Valenzuela presented other identification, including his Social Security card, his work photo ID, and a firearms certification card, according to a 2022 federal court ruling. He was employed as a state prison guard. Three police officers arrested him anyway. Denver prosecutors, three months later, dropped the charge against him. But, because the Colorado Department of Corrections cannot employ anybody facing a felony forgery charge, Valenzuela lost his job following the arrest and stayed unemployed for five months. His attorneys, in a lawsuit filed in federal court, emphasized that his family struggled to pay rent and living expenses.A federal court in 2022 awa...EU lets Ukrainian grain ban expire even as some member countries impose their own

LONDON (AP) — The European Union on Friday decided not to renew a ban on Ukrainian food heading to nearby countries that have complained that an influx of agricultural products from the war-torn nation has hurt their farmers. The move sets up a clash with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, which have said that food coming from Ukraine has become stuck within their borders, creating a glut that has driven down prices for local farmers and hurt their livelihoods. The issue threatens European unity on supporting Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.Poland’s prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, reacted by saying that his government will extend its own the ban on Ukrainian grain, regardless of any lack of consent from the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm. Officials said the measure would be published Friday.“We will do that because it is in the interest of Polish farmers,” Morawiecki said during a campaign rally ahead of Oct. 15 parliamentary...If CSU Rams want love from ESPN, Fox, CBS, analyst says, that starts with beating No. 18 CU Buffs, Deion Sanders

BOULDER — The Rams couldn’t beat Washington State. But if they want a chance to join them, they’re going to have to follow the Cougars’ lead. Right here. Right now.“(For CSU), it’s a very similar situation to Wazzu against Wisconsin last week,” Louis Riddick, ESPN’s color analyst for Saturday night’s Rocky Mountain Showdown, told The Denver Post earlier this week. “Washington State, they’re a team without a home. They’ll go from being a Power 5 (program) to maybe being a Mountain West school. It’s kind of the same with (Saturday) for (The Rams): You’re hunting for credibility. You’re hunting for respect.“The only way to get it is to go against the perceived ‘big dogs’ and take them down and take them down in a dramatic fashion and take them down in a dramatic fashion with a lot of people watching. That’s what you have setting up here (with CU).”Possibly. Wazzu took...Sierra Madre cancels outdoor event due to increased bear encounters
